CA, 10 Sep 2020
Actress Kerry Washington, known for her starring role as Olivia Pope in television show “Scandal,” spoke on Wednesday “as an American” and “advocate who believes deeply in the power of voting” at the virtual House Select Subcommittee hearing for a safe and fair presidential election. Washington serves as a co-chair for When We All Vote, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that aims to increase election participation.
“Today, I am here asking our representatives in Congress to do everything in their power to make our elections safe and secure, but we also need to do our part,” she said.
During her testimony, Washington urged Americans to vote in the upcoming U.S. presidential election and spoke about the importance of voting participation, in her view. Washington also discussed voter suppression and voter roll purging, including how Georgia state had removed “more than 300,000 names” from voter rolls in 2019 – many of which she said were wrongfully removed.
The U.S. presidential election will take place on Nov. 3.
