Africa Weekly: wildfires rage in Algeria as UN issues climate warning

AFP, 13 Aug 2021
This week in Africa, dozens of people have died in wildfires in the north of Algeria, where more than 70 separate fires are wreaking destruction. Scorching temperatures across northern Africa and southern Europe have worsened fires in the Mediterranean. It comes the same week that the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned that the world is warming far faster than previously feared. Meanwhile, Zambians voted in general elections, a tight race pitting President Edgar Lungu and his long-time rival Hakainde Hichilema. Athletes have returned after the Summer Olympics closed, including Burkina Faso's first ever medallist, and Namibia's first female athlete to make the podium. And finally, a remote area in northern Djibouti houses one of the most important rock art sites in the Horn of Africa.
