Ahead of COP26, thousands march for climate action in Brussels
CA, 11 Oct 2021
Some 25,000 people took to the streets of Brussels in Belgium on Sunday to call for climate action ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), based on numbers provided to local police.
More than 80 groups, including Greenpeace, Oxfam and trade unions, gathered in the city centre at about 11 a.m. GMT and marched towards the European Union headquarters.
People came from various cities, with Wavre, Belgium resident and retired doctor, Martine Chaput, saying she wished political leaders acted on climate with the same urgency they did to combat COVID-19.
"It is time for people to sort things out by order of priority and climate is the top priority," Chaput said.
World leaders are due to meet at the COP26 conference from Oct. 31 to Nov. 12.
