Ahmaud Arbery's mother and father, Wanda Cooper-Jones and Marcus Arbery, as well as Rev. Al Sharpton, and prosecutor Linda Dunikoski were among those who spoke outside the courthouse after the three men accused in the 24-year-old's death were all found guilty of murder Wednesday.
Cooper-Jones admitted she did not expect this result after her son was killed in 2020, but said "God is good," and thanked those who had marched in support of her family over the past year-and-a-half.
Arbery's father also spoke about the verdict, saying "today was a good day," but lamenting that he does not want "to see no daddy watch their kid get lynched and shot down," adding no father of any race should experience that. He said people need to fight to make the world a better place for all human beings.
Sharpton said that while the family had lost their son, the case would go down in history.
"Let the word go forth all over the world, that a jury of 11 whites and one Black in the deep south, stood up in the courtroom and said that Black lives do matter," he told the crowd.
Dunikoski, who argued the case over the past week, commended the prosecution team for their work and stressed the verdict was based on facts and evidence. She said the jury system "works in this country" and when "you present the truth to people and they can see it, they will do the right thing."
