Alok Sharma defends Boris Johnson as PM comes under pressure to apologise over care homes comments

Telegraph, 07 Jul 2020
The Prime Minister is coming under pressure to apologise after he suggested yesterday that care homes were to blame for the high coronavirus death rate.

During an interview as part of a visit to Yorkshire, Boris Johnson said more than 20,000 residents had died during the outbreak because "too many care homes didn't really follow the procedures".

This morning Alok Sharma said he was "extremely sorry" about Mr Adams' reaction, but insisted the Prime Minister was merely pointing out that "the correct procedures weren't known at the time".

Asked if Mr Johnson should apologise, the Business Secretary said he had "explained what the Prime Minister was saying" and emphasised the support given to the sector by the Government.
