9/11 anniversary: Ceremony held at the Pentagon to honour victims of Sept. 11 terror attacks | FULL
CA, 11 Sep 2021
Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Army Gen. Mark A. Milley hosted an observance ceremony on Saturday at the Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Va. in honour of the 184 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, 19 members of al-Qaeda, an Islamist extremist group led by Osama bin Laden, hijacked four commercial airliners, flying two into the twin towers of New York’s World Trade Center, while another was crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia.
The fourth jet was brought down by the passengers on board, crashing in a field near Shanksville, Pa., before it could reach the hijackers’ apparent target — the U.S. Capitol or White House in Washington, D.C.
A total of 2,977 people lost their lives and thousands more were injured.
