Armenia and Azerbaijan clash over disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region

DW, 27 Sep 2020
Heavy fighting has erupted in the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. Both sides reported casualties in air and artillery attacks, and each accused the other of starting the hostilities. Nagorno-Karabakh is an ethnically Armenian enclave within Azerbaijan that has been out of Azerbaijan's control since the end of a war in 1994. A demilitarized zone separates the region from the rest of Azerbaijan. The Armenian defense ministry released images of what it said was an attack on Azerbaijani tanks, and of shelling damage in the region's capital Stepanakert. Armenia has responded by declaring martial law and a total military mobilization. Russia has historically backed Armenia in the conflict, and Turkey is expected to side with Azerbaijan.
