AstraZeneca vaccine safe and effective for continued use, EU regulator concludes | FULL
CA, 18 Mar 2021
The European Medical Agency (EMA) declared the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to be "safe and effective," with the benefits of it outweighing the risks following an investigation into reports of blood clots that prompted more than a dozen countries to suspend its use.
However, the drug regulator said they will update their guidance to include an explanation about the potential risks for doctors and the public since they could not rule out definite a link between individual reported cases of blood clots and the vaccine.
Both the EMA and the World Health Organization have said there is no current evidence to suggest the vaccine was responsible for blood clots and that the benefits of immunization far outweighed the potentially small risk of getting vaccinated.
In Canada, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) announced that it has reversed its previous guidance on the vaccine, recommending its use of people over 65 years old.
Health Canada approved the AstraZeneca vaccine for use in anyone 18 years or older in late February. It became the third COVID-19 shot green-lit in Canada, joining vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
