Beirut explosion: Anger and sadness as residents mark 1 week since blast

CA, 12 Aug 2020
Beirut on Tuesday marked a week since the devastating explosion which killed at least 171 people, injured thousands and plunged Lebanon into a deeper political crisis. Thousands of people gathered near the shattered port, remembering those who died in the most destructive single blast to hit the country.

"A lot of anger, sadness, no words, I think I can kill. I feel for all my friends who have been through it, who lost people they love, it's a disaster." Beirut resident Danielle Manasseh said at the memorial.

Those who attended the vigil observed a minute of silence at 6:08 p.m. local time (1508 GMT), the moment on August 4 when thousands of tons of ammonium nitrate exploded in the city's port where it had been stored for more than six years. At the same moment, church bells tolled and mosque loudspeakers recited a call to prayer.
