Beirut explosion: FBI to arrive in Lebanon to participate in explosion probe

CA, 15 Aug 2020
U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs David Hale said the FBI would be arriving in Beirut, Lebanon, over the weekend to participate in the probe into the port explosions.

Speaking in Beirut on Saturday, Hale called for a “thorough and transparent” investigation into the Aug. 4 blast and said the FBI would take part in the investigation at the request of the Lebanese authorities.

The cause of the fire that ignited nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate at Beirut’s port remains unclear, but documents have shown the country’s top leadership and security officials were aware of the chemicals stored at the port.

Top Lebanese officials have rejected calls for an independent probe, describing it as a “waste of time” that would be politicized.
