Belarus protests: Crackdown intensifies as more activists detained
CA, 10 Sep 2020
Exactly one month since the disputed election in Belarus triggered country-wide protests, the crackdown against opposition activists appears to be intensifying as authorities on Wednesday detained one of the two last leading members of an opposition council who remained free. As Redmond Shannon reports, the country's future may slowly be turning into a tug-of-war between Europe and Moscow.
The rising pressure on activists comes as Belarus marks a month of massive demonstrations protesting President Alexander Lukashenko’s reelection to a sixth term in the Aug. 9 vote, which the opposition rejects as rigged. The protests that drew up to 200,000 on Sunday cast an unprecedented challenge to the Belarusian leader’s iron-fist rule.
