Belarusian president Lukashenko calls on “western powers” not to intervene as protests continue

CA, 20 Aug 2020
Belarusan President Alexander Lukashenko told what he called “the western powers” not to intervene in his country’s interior affairs after he was criticized by different European countries for his allegedly violent handling of peaceful protests following the recent presidential elections he won on August 9.

Hundreds of Belarusian protesters gathered in Minsk on Wednesday evening, defying a new order from Lukashenko for police to clear the streets of the capital after a week-and-a-half of rallies against his rule.

People chanted "resign," and "let them out,” referring to detained protesters, while Lukashenko called European countries such as Germany and France not to “nod at Belarus” and to concentrate on their own problems.

Lukashenko, a gruff former collective farm boss facing the biggest crisis of his 26-year rule, has blamed foreign countries for stirring unrest and funding protesters.

At least two protesters have died and thousands have been jailed, many emerging to complain of beatings and abuse.
