President-elect Joe Biden on Friday denounced the rioters who stormed the U.S. Capitol as “thugs" and "domestic terrorists” and said those responsible for the insurrection will be investigated and prosecuted. (Jan. 8)
Biden said the attack "should be thoroughly investigated" and those responsible should be "held accountable."
He said the difference between this insurgency and other violent protests was that this event "had the active encouragement of a sitting president of the United States and the way in which the breakdown in security occurred." And he underscored again that it needs to be thoroughly investigated.
The president-elect also said he wants his Justice Department to take steps to ensure "this never happens again."
Asked whether he believes his inauguration will be safe after Wednesday's insurrection, Biden said it's the Secret Service that handles inaugural events and he "has great confidence" in that agency and "great confidence in their ability to make sure the inauguration goes off safely and goes off without a hitch."
