Biden unveils plan to curb gun violence in response to US shootings | LIVE

CA, 08 Apr 2021
U.S. President Joe Biden is expected to unveil his administration's first steps on gun violence in the country on Thursday, advancing a half-dozen executive actions on gun control.

Among Biden's plans is to ask the Justice Department to come up with rules to stop the proliferation of untraceable "ghost guns," which can be assembled from kits within a half-hour and lack the serial number that allows law enforcement to trace them. He also plans to ask the department to place new restrictions on devices marketed as a stabilizing brace that allows a pistol to be transformed into a short-barreled rifle.

One action will also look into devising model "red flag" legislation that can be passed by state legislatures, which would allow family members or law enforcement officers to ask a court to bar a person in crisis from accessing firearms if they present a danger to themselves or others.

Biden's moves come as calls continue to mount in the wake of several mass shootings over the past few weeks, including those in Atlanta, Georgia and Boulder, Colorado that saw a total of 17 deaths across the two events. But Thursday's executive actions still fall far short of the goals he outlined as a presidential candidate, in part due to the gridlock faced on Capitol Hill given the 50-50 split in the Senate.
