Brazil on track to become world leader in COVID-19 deaths, president still downplays situation

For the first time in the pandemic, Brazil’s daily deaths of COVID-19 surpassed 4,000 while the country's president still downplays the situation and encourages regions to avoid lockdowns.
The P.1 variant, which has been first detected in Brazil and has the potential to lower the effectiveness of some vaccines, is still rapidly spreading across the country.
