Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau is expected to make an announcement on Monday in Longueuil, Que., as the first full day of the federal election campaign begins.

Trudeau confirmed on Sunday that he spoke with the newly-minted Gov. Gen. Mary Simon earlier in the day and asked her to dissolve the minority government he has led since October 2019.

Trudeau first became prime minister in 2015 when he won a majority government. But he was reduced to a minority government in the 2019 federal election, meaning he has needed the support of at least one other party — frequently the NDP — to survive votes of confidence and pass bills during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Election Day will be Sept. 20, meaning the campaign will be five weeks long.
