Canada’s fiscal snapshot: One-on-one with Finance Minister Bill Morneau

CA, 09 Jul 2020
Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau joins Dawna Friesen from Ottawa to discuss the country’s fiscal and economic snapshot following Wednesday's announcement that Canada will see the deficit soar to $343 billion this year.

Morneau said what was most important in today’s announcement was to “give Canadians an understanding of where we’re at,” as well as “the importance of our continued support for individuals, but also for our economy.”

“Now, we need to think about how we get to that ‘safe restart,’” he said.

Morneau also discussed CERB benefits for Canadians amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that he sees CERB “declining in importance,” but that the government is focused on wage subsidies.

He added that they are working on building “a framework so we can move into that ‘new normal.’’
