Canada's foreign minister discusses China's sentencing of Canadian citizens | LIVE
CA, 11 Aug 2021
Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Marc Garneau is expected to hold a media availability on Wednesday to discuss recent developments on consular cases in China following Chinese court sentencing of Canadian Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison.
China’s conviction and sentencing of Canadian Michael Spavor is “absolutely unacceptable and unjust,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Spavor, an entrepreneur who was detained by Chinese authorities, was convicted of espionage by a Chinese court and sentenced to 11 years in prison on Wednesday.
Spavor, along with Michael Kovrig, was detained in China in December 2018 in apparent retaliation for the arrest days earlier of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver by RCMP at the behest of American authorities.
