Canada's new UN ambassador talks China, George Orwell, and Canada's role on the world stage

CA, 07 Jul 2020
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tapped Bob Rae as Canada’s new ambassador to the United Nations.

The appointment announced Monday comes only weeks after Canada lost its bid for a temporary seat on the UN Security Council and adds to the growing list of roles and positions that the 71-year-old Rae has held under the Trudeau government.|

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Rae was asked if he supports releasing Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, as many have called for, in an attempt to secure in exchange the release of Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig in China?

As well, Rae referenced author George Orwell's iconic novel "1984" when he described the "strange" actions China had taken recently in regards to Canada.
