Canada's support of Ukraine rooted in keeping peace, supporting people: Trudeau | FULL

CA, 20 Jan 2022
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, alongside Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, delivered an update on Wednesday as the Omicron-fuelled fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic appears to be peaking in some provinces, while others say the worst is likely still to come.

Even as they both set new records for hospitalizations, officials in Ontario and Quebec say the daily rate seems to be decreasing slightly, although they caution the health-care system remains under tremendous pressure.

Trudeau also said during the press conference that decisions regarding Canada's support of the Ukraine, amid escalating tensions with Russia, will be rooted in keeping peace while supporting the Ukrainian people. This comes as Ottawa sent a small group of Canadian Special Forces to Ukraine.

The latest evidence shows that the Omicron variant is contagious for up to 10 days, chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam said Tuesday.

Tam told the House of Commons health committee that the sheer number infections from Omicron is stressing workforces and is a reason to adjust our risk tolerance for ending isolation periods early.
