Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to provide an update on Tuesday, alongside federal health officials, on how the country continues to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
He will be joined by chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam, deputy chief public health officer Dr. Howard Njoo and Intergovernmental Affairs Minister Dominic LeBlanc.
He issued a warning to young people on Friday, as new COVID-19 variants continue to blanket the country, spreading quickly and sending younger Canadians into ICUs.
“There are more contagious and more serious variants out there. Even if you’re younger, you can get sick very, very quickly,” he said. “Or you can give the virus to someone you love, who can get very sick. I know you’ve already done so much and sacrificed so much, but we need you to hang in there just a little longer.”
The prime minister also said the federal government built in "responsive adjustments" to federal COVID-19 financial support so the system could react to the possibility of future waves of the virus.
Trudeau's update on Tuesday comes as daily cases in Canada have now outpaced the U.S. per capita. As of Saturday, the seven-day average number of new cases was 207.27 cases per million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University and the University of Oxford's Our World in Data explorer. In the U.S., it's 206.66 cases per million people.
