Canadian health officials give briefing on approval of AstraZeneca vaccine | LIVE

CA, 26 Feb 2021
Officials at the Public Health Agency of Canada are expected to provide a briefing on the approval of Oxford-AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine on Friday.

The vaccine is the third shot officially authorized for use in the country.

The approval by Health Canada follows that of Pfizer and Moderna, both of which also require two doses.

The AstraZeneca shot is less effective in clinical trials than its rivals’ injections — 62 per cent versus high 90s — but offers distinct benefits, including that it can be stored and transported at normal refrigerated temperatures.

The authorization sets in motion an agreement for up to 20 million vaccine doses to gradually funnel into Canada, though it's not expected the shots will be received until at least the second quarter of this year.
