Canadian MPs debate WE Charity controversy in House of Commons | HIGHLIGHTS

CA, 21 Jul 2020
Canadian MPs largely debated the WE Charity controversy during Monday’s Question Period in the House of Commons.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer attacked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for taking a personal day as the House returned to debate wage subsidy legislation, under the cloud of accusations of yet another ethics breach over the WE Charity scandal.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh also addressed the controversy, saying “There were lots of ways to help students, this was not it” and asked if the government “will admit this wasn’t about helping students,” but “about helping close friends.”

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said the government understands the importance of helping young Canadians, and stated that “we will not allow you to be left behind.”

Trudeau is facing an investigation for conflict of interest after his government awarded WE Charity Canada a contract to manage a $912 million grant program aimed at helping students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prime minister has admitted he should have recused himself from the decision to award the contract, given his family’s links to the group co-founded by brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger.
