Centuries-old French oaks felled for Notre Dame rebuild
Guardian, 10 Mar 2021
Ancient French oaks have been felled after they were selected to reconstruct the fallen spire of Notre Dame in Paris. A nationwide tree hunt began after it was decided that the spire would be rebuilt exactly as it was before it was destroyed by fire in April 2019. The trees needed to have trunks at least one metre wide and 18 metres long. The timber harvesting must be completed by the end of March to prevent tree sap and moisture entering the wood fibres. They will then be dried for up to 18 months. Among the trees selected were those from a once-royal Forest of Bercé in France's Loire region
