President Xi Jinping says China is donating 1.5 billion yuan (US$232.5million) to a new Kunming Biodiversity Fund to promote global biodiversity conservation. The Chinese president made the announcement on October 12, 2021, at the Leaders’ Summit of the COP15 conference being held in the Chinese southwestern city of Kunming. Xi also pledged to speed up development of wind and solar power in China, after earlier promising that the country would soon release a carbon emissions reductions plan. China currently emits more than a quarter of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Global Carbon Project.
