Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Bali. They talked for five hours and described their talk as constructive. This year’s G20 Summit in Bali takes place in November, which is coincidentally around the same time China has its 20th CPC National Congress and the U.S. has its midterm elections. The Biden administration is currently mulling cutting back the Trump-era tariffs while considering domestic politics. Can China and the U.S. use areas of common interest to build better ties, especially in a year when domestic politics looms large?
