How to innovate in traditional Chinese ink-wash painting is something many artists have been trying to figure out. For Wang Xiaoyan, inheriting ideas and techniques from old classics while trying to break conventions has defined her career for decades. Born in the famous ancient city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province, Wang later studied and lived in Japan for over 20 years, where she earned a diploma from the Tokyo University of the Arts. Thanks to years of unremitting exploration, Wang has developed her own unique style of painting.
