Clashes erupt between Armenia and Azerbaijan over disputed region

CA, 27 Sep 2020
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev said Sunday that Armenia was first to open fire as clashes erupted between the two countries over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

“Aberbaijan gave a decent response to the enemy and the enemy could not move an inch,” Aliyev said.

Armenia has disputed the claims and said that Azerbaijan carried out an air and artillery attack in the region to which Armenia responded, seizing control of up to seven villages. A claim which Nagorno-Karabakh has denied.

Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Sunday called on the international community to “prevent with united efforts” Turkey’s involvement in the conflict between the two countries, after the latter sharply criticized Armenia.
Pashinyan said Turkey’s behaviour could have “devastating consequences for the South Caucuses and adjacent regions.”
