Conservative MP Poilievre says Bill Morneau "should have quit a long time ago"

CA, 18 Aug 2020
Conservative Shadow Minister for Finance Pierre Poilievre on Tuesday responded to reports that Finance Minister Bill Morneau had resigned because of a policy difference with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, telling reporters “there is no policy difference.”

Poilievre said Trudeau and Morneau had been aligned on policy until the recent scandal involving the WE Charity. The government had selected the charity, which had ties to both the Trudeau and Morneau families, to administer a Canada-wide student volunteer program.

The Conservative MP said Morneau “should have quit a long time ago" citing previous ethics probes into the finance minister’s actions. He added that Morneau’s “offences pale in comparison to Trudeau’s.”

Poilievre also commented on reports that Chrystia Freeland would take over as finance minister following Morneau’s departure. He pointed out that Freeland had chaired the cabinet committee that awarded the Canada Student Service Grant to WE.

Poilievre said Freeland’s appointment would not represent a sea change in the Trudeau administration.
