Controversial statue of Confederate general removed in Virginia
AFP, 09 Sep 2021
Crews remove a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, to the sound of cheers from crowds assembled on Monument Avenue. "If we continue to keep up these statues that show oppression, then we’re just telling people that look like me and my daughter that you don’t matter," says 33-year-old Michael Hayes, who witnessed the event with his daughter Mykah. The statue became a focal point for US protests for racial justice after the death of George Floyd, a black man killed by white police in 2020.
