Coronavirus: B.C. education minister provides update on province's back-to-school funding | FULL

CA, 04 Sep 2020
British Columbia's Minister of Education Rob Fleming held a press conference Thursday to provide an update on the province's back-to-school plans ahead of in-class learning resumption next week.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged $242 million federal support for B.C.'s back-to-school plans during a virtual visit to the province with Premier John Horgan on Wednesday.

Fleming explained how the federal funding will "build and expand" on B.C.'s plans for a safe return to the classroom, saying that the province would receive the first half of the payment in September, and funding would be allocated to public school districts based on enrollment.

He added that $12.1 million would be reserved for emerging COVID-related issues between September and December 2020.

Fleming said they would receive up to an additional $121.18 million in January, which he said would be allocated at that time.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation sent a letter to Education Minister Rob Fleming on Wednesday that detailed how the union would like to see the money spent.

The province confirmed another 104 COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing the total number of active cases to 1,127.
