British Columbia's provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix provided an update on Thursday on the response to COVID-19 in the province and reported there were 29 new cases and no new deaths.
Henry thanked youth for taking advice after recent outbreaks, but said that everyone knows someone who broke the COVID-19 rules and that "if you see them again, help them to get back on track." She also called on the public to play it safe over the B.C. Day long weekend and help prevent a second surge in COVID-19 cases.
On Wednesday, B.C. announced its plan for schools with students being organized into a consistent group of staff and students, to be called learning groups, in a bid to reduce the risk of transmission while ensuring quicker contact-tracing if needed. The learning groups will be no more than 60 people in elementary and middle school and no more than 120 people in secondary school.
Asked about her confidence in the plan, Henry on Thursday said schools will be safe for educators, students and staff, and that in terms of learning groups people should remember to maintain physical distance as best they can as it is not their family bubble.
