Coronavirus: Boris Johnson defends UK's test and trace system in fiery debate in House of Commons
CA, 16 Jul 2020
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson fiercely defended his government's preparations for a potential second spike of the COVID-19 pandemic as he was quizzed by opposition lawmakers on Wednesday.
Referencing a report commissioned by the Government Office for Science, opposition Labour leader Keir Starmer quizzed the PM over whether he is taking heed of its recommendation to prepare for a winter rise in coronavirus cases throughout the months of July and August.
Johnson said the government was "implementing the preparations" for a potential second spike but did not say whether all of the recommendations were being worked on.
Those recommendations include a greatly expanded test and trace infrastructure, after the government's own system experienced multiple delays and subsequent criticism from opposition lawmakers.
