Canada's federal ministers and health officials are expected to provide an update on the country's ongoing response to the COVID-19 pandemic on Friday.

Officials on Thursday unveiled a $37-billion plan for workers affected by the pandemic, which include broad changes to Employment Insurance (EI) and the creation of three new benefit programs.

The Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) will be extended another four weeks, and a new benefit that pays $400 a week for up to 26 weeks will replace it for those ineligible for EI.

Canada added 383 new cases of COVID-19 to its total on Thursday, along with five more deaths.
