Coronavirus: Demonstrators protest localized lockdowns in Madrid

CA, 21 Sep 2020
Protesters facing localized lockdowns in some of Madrid’s less affluent areas flooded Spain’s capital on Sunday, frustrated by what they say is “discrimination” by authorities.

Madrid’s regional government announced on Friday that movement between and within six districts, which are home to about 850,000 people, would be restricted Monday, although people living in those areas would still be allowed to go to work.

The restrictions were announced as an attempt to stem the city’s soaring COVID-19 infection rate, but predominantly hit low-income areas with higher immigrant populations.

Protesters are also calling for the resignation of Madrid regional leader Isabel Diaz Ayuso, who has come under fire after claiming that “the way of life of immigrants” was partially to blame for the rise in cases.
