Coronavirus: English council budgets used to hire 'COVID marshals' to enforce social distancing

Sky, 11 Sep 2020
The newest line of enforcement of 'COVID marshals' in England will soon hit the streets to enforce the 'rule of six'.

There is confusion over how they will be funded and what powers they will have, but York had already put in place a similar scheme with a private company before Boris Johnson's announcement.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) said councils could draw on existing staff or volunteers to fill the roles. The new marshals would wear bright clothing to support members of the public in one-way systems and prevent mixing between groups.
