Health Canada officials announced on Friday the approval of Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine.

Johnson & Johnson's vaccine would be the fifth vaccine to be approved for emergency use in Canada, following Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca's vaccines.

As of Thursday, more than 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in Canada, with 3.6 per cent of Canadians receiving one dose, and 1.4 per cent receiving two doses.

Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin said a “steep increase” in vaccine availability is expected in April with some 23 million doses of both Pfizer and Moderna expected between April and June.
