Coronavirus: India to reimpose restrictions as cases cross 820,000
CA, 11 Jul 2020
India recorded 27,114 novel coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours on July 11, taking the total to 820,915, including 22,123 deaths, as local authorities re-imposed lockdowns in many states across the country.
India now has the world's third-largest outbreak, behind only the United States and Brazil in confirmed cases.
However, the lockdown was not imposed in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, which have been the worst-affected by the pandemic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the country, in a meeting attended by Interior Minister Amit Shah, Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan, and other senior officials of the central government.
Modi's government, anxious to jump-start the economy stung by the pandemic, is keen to put millions of people back to work. In early June the government eased some of the three-month-long strict lockdown restrictions imposed on the 1.3 billion population.
But rising new flare-ups of the virus has been forcing some major industrial towns and states to re-impose localized restrictions.
