Coronavirus: "Light at end of the tunnel" as Britain opens mass vaccination centres

CA, 12 Jan 2021
A newly vaccinated British woman said she sees "the light at the end of the tunnel" after receiving her COVID-19 shot as Britain's mass vaccination centres opened on Monday.

Hazel Watson, 82, who visited Bristol, one of the sites launched to speed up inoculations across the United Kingdom, said she had missed seeing extended family during self-isolation, finding it "really hard."

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was visiting the Bristol centre, one of seven in the country, including Surrey, London, Newcastle, Manchester, Stevenage and Birmingham, and spoke to the couple after they had the jab.

Britain has done what it can to speed up the approval of batches of COVID-19 vaccine but there is a limit to how quickly the process can be expedited, an official who has led the procurement of vaccines during the pandemic said on Monday. There has been scrutiny on the amount of time it takes to approve batches of vaccine doses as Britain races to vaccinate the elderly and vulnerable by mid-February.

A total of 2,286,572 people have received a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in the United Kingdom while 388,677 second doses have been given, according to government data published on Monday.
