Coronavirus: New Zealand probe finds 1st suspected case of community transmission in months

CA, 24 Jan 2021
New Zealand health officials are investigating a suspected community case of COVID-19, the first possible case of community transmission the country has seen since November.

According to officials, the case is a 56-year-old woman who had travelled to Spain and the Netherlands late last year before returning to the country. She went through managed isolation, part of the country's border measures, and was released on Jan. 13 after testing negative. During her stay in isolation, they said she tested negative twice.

She travelled around the southern part of Northland after her release from isolation and became symptomatic on Jan. 15. Officials say the strain is unknown, but are "acting on the assumption" it is one of the new, more transmissible strains. At this time, they say it is too early to speculate on further response but ask residents to continue practicing what needs to be done to keep each other safe, including washing your hands and stay home if unwell.
