Coronavirus: Ontario to accelerate development of new long-term care homes | FULL

CA, 16 Jul 2020
Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Wednesday his government would accelerate the development of new long term care homes in the province, reaffirming its previous promise to invest $1.75 billion to build.

The premier made the announcement during his daily COVID-19 briefing, alongside Deputy Premier and Health Minister Christine Elliott and Minister of Long-term Care Merrilee Fullerton.

Fullerton said the government would change the way it funds long-term care home construction in a bid to spur more development throughout the province. She said the new formula would pay builders more, and include grants to cover up to 17 per cent of up-front capital costs.

Fullerton also announced changes to visitation for residents of long-term care homes Wednesday, stating that up to two people at one time are now able to participate in outdoor visits without being tested for COVID-19. She said as of July 22, indoor visits will be able to resume as long as visitors can show they’ve tested negative for COVID-19.
