CA, 31 Jul 2020
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Friday the introduction of a COVID Alert app in conjunction with the province of Ontario. The app is voluntary and won't require names, addresses or geo-location. Trudeau said the federal government is working to integrate other provinces into the app.
Trudeau also announced $59 million in funding to protect the health and safety of migrant workers on Canadian farms. It will be used to increase inspections, provide emergency relief and improve the living conditions of workers.
Also announced on Friday was the transition of those on the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) program to Employment Insurance (EI). Trudeau said EI will increase its coverage to include every Canadian looking for employment.
The prime minister also fielded several questions regrading WE Charity, a day after he testified to the House of Commons finance committee about his role in the decision to give WE Charity a sole-sourced deal to administer a $912 million student grant program. Trudeau maintained that he should have removed himself from the deal due to the connections both he and his family have with WE Charity.
Quebec and Alberta reported the most new coronavirus cases in Canada on Thursday at 122 and 113 each, respectively.
In total, Canada recorded 393 new cases on Thursday and 10 more deaths.
