Coronavirus: Trump announces FDA's authorization of plasma treatment for COVID-19 | LIVE
CA, 24 Aug 2020
U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce a "major therapeutic breakthrough" on Sunday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Saturday evening.
White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said Sunday the announcement was intended to put the "heat" on bureaucrats. He said Trump would put pressure on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or "anybody else to make sure that we deliver on behalf of the American people."
According to reports, Trump will announce the emergency authorization of convalescent plasma for COVID-19. It uses blood from patients that have recovered and built antibodies against the virus and infuses it into people with COVID-19 to prevent severe disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Clinical trials have not proven whether plasma can help patients battle COVID-19, but an emergency authorization doesn't require the same amount of evidence as FDA approval.
