Toronto Mayor John Tory and the city’s medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa discussed the introduction of a new policy to introduce mandatory face masks and coverings on buses and subway trains on Thursday.

The new rule, which came into effect on July 2, applies to all riders except children under the age of two, riders with underlying health issues that make it too difficult to wear a mask and riders who are unable to remove or put on a mask or face covering without help.

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) personnel in non-public areas or those who are working behind a physical barrier or shield are also exempt from the policy.
