Coronavirus: WHO chief says "too many countries headed in wrong direction"
CA, 13 Jul 2020
World Health Organization director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated bluntly on Monday that “too many countries are headed in the wrong direction" in containing the spread of the coronavirus.
This came after the organization reported a record increase of 230,370 global COVID-19 cases on Sunday, with 80 per cent coming from just 10 countries and more than 50 per cent from just two countries.
The United States has broken global records by registering about 60,000 new cases a day for the last four days in a row.
WHO has announced last week that experts would travel to China over the weekend to prepare a study of the origins of the novel coronavirus and how it jumped from animals to humans.
This came as the WHO acknowledged during Tuesday's briefing "emerging evidence" that coronavirus may be airborne after a group of scientists urged the global body to update its guidance on how the respiratory disease passes between people.
Cases worldwide were approaching 13 million on Sunday.
