World Health Organization emergencies programme director Dr. Michael Ryan on Friday spoke about case numbers and how they may differ in parts of the world, stressing that COVID-19 was “not burning” out and is not going away, especially for those countries entering their winter season.

Technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove said case numbers is only one factor of tracking how severe COVID-19 is in a country, saying ICU admissions and hospital occupancy also need to be looked at.

Globally, cases surpassed 30 million as of Friday and deaths passed 945,000.

Over 20 million people around the world have recovered from COVID-19.
