Coronavirus: WHO urges countries not to turn reopening of schools into "political football"
CA, 13 Jul 2020
The World Health Organization’s (WHO) emergencies programme executive director Michael Ryan and the WHO’s technical lead Maria Van Kerkhove spoke Monday about transmission rates of COVID-19 among children as well as the ongoing concerns over school reopenings in the U.S.
Both said transmission among children to children or to adults is still an aspect difficult to understand, but Ryan stressed people should not make the reopening of schools a “political football,” saying it must be done where community transmission has been suppressed by a broad-based strategy.
The United States has broken global records by registering about 60,000 new cases a day for the last four days in a row.
Cases worldwide were approaching 13 million on Sunday.
