COVID-19 Surges, spikes: How worried should we be?

The coronavirus pandemic has taken a turn for the worse. The Chinese mainland has reported over 100 daily new COVID-19 cases, a big surge since April. Though the number is not huge, it's still worrisome to the public. The U.S. remains the epicenter of the pandemic, accounting for over a quarter of the world total. The second and third worst-hit countries are Brazil and India. Meanwhile some other countries where the pandemic was well contained earlier, now are encountering a surge in infections such as Japan and South Korea. Not out of the woods yet, how can nations cope with the peaks and valleys of recurring infections?
