COVID-19: Trudeau, ministers provide update on country's response amid Omicron surge | LIVE

CA, 13 Jan 2022
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to provide an update on the COVID-19 situation in the country on Wednesday as daily hospitalization rates surge across Canada.

He will be joined by Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development Mary Ng, and Public Services and Procurement Minister Filomena Tassi.

The update comes as the Omicron surge is seeing hospitals fill up, forcing many to cancel and delay surgeries as cases fill up hospital beds and strain resources, according to frontline doctors. It's posing a risk that if the trend continues upwards, emergency care — a hospital's ability to quickly respond to everything from a sprained wrist to a heart attack — could be impacted too.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos and Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic LeBlanc reassured Canadians that the federal government is anticipating more calls for help from provinces over the next week and is ready to help with the resources needed.
