Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), provided an update on Tuesday regarding the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The update comes as researchers in Texas have developed a vaccine called CORBEVAX that can be manufactured cheaply and quickly in low-income countries, without the complications of licensing, patents or limited supply.

Developing nations have struggled with vaccination, after limited doses of expensive vaccines were snapped up by wealthier countries.

Tedros has previously called on countries to join the global campaign to vaccinate 70 per cent of every country’s population by mid-2022, saying that vaccine equity was the biggest failure of the past two years.
